About Me…
I qualified as a Graduate Nurse from the University of Hull in 1989
and started work in the Renal Medicine Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital, Hull. However my interest in women’s health led me to return home to Edinburgh to undertake Midwifery training. Thereafter I worked as a midwife at the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion and then Airedale NHS Trust, West Yorkshire. Between these 2 units I worked in all areas of the maternity services including neonatal care.
In 1997 I became a Registered Midwife Teacher with the then UKCC (United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery & Health Visiting) having completed a PgDip in Health Professional Education at the University of Huddersfield. Teaching placements were undertaken at the University of Leeds.
Since then I have taught Midwifery to both pre-registration and post-registration midwives for 13 years - working as a Midwifery Lecturer at the University of Bradford, University of York and more recently at Edinburgh Napier University. I completed my MSc Midwifery in 2007.
Teaching interests include ‘teaching’ itself - I have always strived to provide top quality teaching and learning experiences. Other interests / specialist areas include the anatomy and physiology of labour and birth, plus research methods & analysis. Based on my MSc research I have a special interest in the biomechanics of the maternal pelvis during childbirth. Nonetheless, perhaps my most important qualification and relevant experience is that I have 3 children of my own - born both in hospital and at home.
My experiences of Maternity Services are wide and varied - I have been an educational Link-Lecturer for Airedale NHS Trust, Bradford Royal Infirmary, Harrogate NHS Trust, Northallerton NHS Trust and most recently the Simpson Centre for Reproductive Medicine, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Over the past 2 years I have been asked increasingly to provide one-to-one childbirth education to friends and acquaintances. Having now trained as a Hypnobirthing® practitioner I am now enjoying extending my teaching to couples in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife. This allows me to better juggle motherhood and work.
